Celebrating the 99th Anniversary of the United States Navy Reserve

This month, as we mark the 99th anniversary of the Navy Reserve, I want to take a few moments to thank you for your service and reflect upon our proud heritage.

From state Naval Militias, to today’s Navy Reserve, we have become an essential element of the total force that is America’s Navy. In every major conflict, from World War I to Iraq and Afghanistan, Reserve Sailors have proven to be a key component of our nation’s defense strategy. In fact, as I write this, 24% of the Navy Reserve Force is providing global operational support to fleet and combatant commanders. Whether mobilized to support overseas contingency operations or participating in a bilateral naval exercise, our fully integrated personnel bring to the Navy skill sets that have been honed by both military and civilian training. It is this breadth and depth of experience, unique to the “Citizen Sailor,” that has enhanced operational readiness and strengthened the fabric of our force.

The men and women with whom I have the privilege of serving, from the most senior officers to the most junior deck plate Sailors, are some of the brightest and the best our country has to offer. You are dedicated patriots who, every day, are true to our Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. You take tremendous pride in our heritage, look with confidence toward our future, and have truly helped to make our Navy the greatest the world has ever known.

Next year we will celebrate our 100th Anniversary! I hope that all of you will join in and be a part of this great milestone. Our Centennial Commemoration will afford us the opportunity to highlight the Navy Reserve’s extraordinary Sailors and their accomplishments, past and present. There will be events across America, which will showcase our rich history as well as the value and capabilities of the Navy Reserve.

So, I ask for your help in identifying Navy Reserve veterans in your communities. Invite them to be a part of our celebrations and make certain that these living links to our storied past know that they remain a valued part of the Navy family.

As always, thank you for your service and I look forward to seeing you in the Fleet!
