Petty Officer Chen recently returned from a voluntary deployment to Bahrain where he served as the Maritime Tactical Operations Center equipment and maintenance watchstander for Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10.

How have you benefited from your service in the Navy Reserve?

As a prior active duty sailor, being in the reserve is quite different. The Navy Reserve has allowed me to proudly serve in the military while being a little closer to home to enjoy my family and community.  In my community, I volunteer as a Teacher’s Assistant at our local elementary school for afterschool curriculums and academic tutoring. I especially enjoy helping young children because I believe they are America’s future. I recently decided to pursue a commission as Naval Officer and have been focusing my ATs and professional skills and knowledge trainings toward this goal.

Why did you choose to join the Navy Reserve?

After completing my active duty obligation with VFA-2, I still wanted to serve and protect my country, but I also wanted to stay close to my family and attend a four-year university. The Reserve provided a way for me to accomplish both, while serving.  What a win-win situation.  The Reserve has also helped with my technical training, professionalism and work ethic while I worked at a local insurance firm. My experience in the Reserve allowed me to adapt to the dynamic customer service based environment in the insurance business.

In my Navy…

much has changed over time, but I always remember to live by the Navy’s Core Values and strive for excellence and the fair treatment of all.
