Spotlight Highlight

GM1 Martin is an assistant principal and a Sailor. His passion for education and the Navy inspired him to mentor high school students; he eventually created a NJROTC detachment at his high school in order to share with them the rich history and traditions of the Navy. Named Reserve Sailor of the Year 2013 at Navy Operational Support Center Austin.

How have you benefited from your service in the Navy Reserve?

The friends that I have made, the camaraderie that I have experienced and the places I have seen have made me a better person.  None of this would have been possible had I not joined the Navy Reserve.  The training and skills that the Navy Reserve has provided me was a deciding factor in my ability to obtain my civilian job as an Assistant Principal at the very High School I graduated from.

Why did you choose to join the Navy Reserve?

I wanted to serve my country and still continue to serve my hometown community as a teacher and coach at my high school.  I chose the Navy Reserve because I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself.  Choosing the Navy Reserve afforded the opportunity to enjoy the best of both.

In my Navy…

some things have changed during the last 100 years, but the important aspects of serving with Honor, Courage and Commitment are still engrained in each Sailor.  The heritage and history created by those who came before me is still honored and respected by today’s Sailors.
